Key Signs of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) link the temporal bones of the skull with the mandible (lower jawbone), enabling the mouth to open, close, and move in various directions. These joints, supported by muscles, bone, and cartilage, are essential for everyday functions such as speaking, eating, and smiling.

When these joints do not operate smoothly, it may lead to discomfort and restricted movement, a condition known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ).

Causes and Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

  • Painful chewing
  • Persistent pain and discomfort around the TMJ or in the face or neck
  • Earaches or ringing in the ears
  • Changes in bite alignment
  • Muscle spasms near the jaw
  • Clicking, popping, or grating noises when the jaw moves
  • Jaws that are limited in movement or lock open or shut
If you suspect you might have TMJ, our team can create a bite guard to help symptoms. If pain is more severe, we will refer you to a TMJ specialist.

TMJ Treatments

Often, conservative treatment is effective in treating TMJ. Our team will work closely with your specialist who will determine treatment if the specialized bite guard doesn't help.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, ice packs, and moist heat compresses
  • Behavioral changes to reduce jaw pain (such as avoiding gum chewing, jaw clenching, and nail biting, and improving posture)
  • Stress relief and relaxation techniques
  • Muscle relaxants, corticosteroids, or anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Custom-fitted mouthguards, bite plates, or splints to protect against tooth grinding
  • Dental adjustments to correct minor bite misalignments
  • Orthodontic treatment for more significant bite issues
Jaw pain isn't always caused by TMJ, and many cases are temporary. However, frequent discomfort, restricted movement, or other persistent symptoms warrant a visit to your dentist or doctor for a comprehensive evaluation. Early treatment can prevent further joint damage and restore comfortable jaw function.
